SENSEI SAN NDLOVU
A Playhouse Company and Siwela Sonke dancer, already an FNB Vita Award winner.
Chapter 1 · 1994–2011
Before the stunts and the stunt school there was the stage: the Playhouse in Durban, Siwela Sonke Dance Theatre, and two FNB Vita Awards.
Durban Magazine called him “a hot-stepper”. For most of the 1990s, Sensei San Ndlovu’s working life was measured in rehearsals, premieres and tours.
A DUT graduate, Sensei San Ndlovu joined the Playhouse Company and Siwela Sonke Dance Theatre in 1995. That same year he won the FNB Vita Award for Most Outstanding Male Dancer.
The Playhouse years brought musical theatre as well as dance. He was lead dancer in Evita!, Wet & Other Works and the Night of 100 Stars gala, and dance coordinator on Hair.
Siwela Sonke Dance Theatre was officially launched in April 1997, with coverage in The Mercury and Next. That year he was lead dancer in the company’s Unclenching the Fist, featured in Daily News Tonight.
With the company he toured Germany, Mozambique, Pakistan and India.
The dancer became a choreographer. In 2001/02 he received a second FNB Vita Award, for Most Promising Choreographer. In 2002 he staged RISK at Artscape in Cape Town, his own production, showcasing the talent of his Kyoku-Shura RYTHMS students.
His last production before leaving South Africa was at the Infecting the City festival in February 2011, where he coordinated and choreographed the street-stage performances.
